If you wish to deploy a form in a non-editable format, change the form setting “Lock form designer on export” to ON. When the form gets exported, the paint brush (editor) icon will not display on the form and therefore the people that you share this form with will not be able to modify it. One downside of this approach is that you are the only one that has a copy of the master form template. This could be a problem if your iPad were to get stolen or damaged. To guard against this possibility, be sure to make a backup of your form and store it where one or more people would have access to it.

Service and repair companies are big users of the FormConnect and FormConnect Pro apps. The service technician fills out a form on the customer’s premise and then has the customer sign off on the work performed. Many of these types of forms include check lists of the type of work performed by the technician.

A common use case for the FormConnect Pro app is to create a form documenting the number of hours performed on a job. You enter the employee’s name and the number of hours worked. The hours are broken down by regular hours, over time hours and double time hours and then totaled.

In the sample form below, a supervisor fills out this form and signs it authorizing the work performed.

One of the features of the FormConnect and FormConnect Pro apps is the ability to view every form that you have ever filled out. The forms are saved by the primary field on the form (e.g., Building) that you define and sorted in alphabetical order. If you wish to view that form, just tap on it or scroll down to that entry and it will display in the center of the screen.

Have you ever had to check the inventory in a warehouse, stock room or lab? It often entails carrying a clipboard as you walk through the aisles, recording the quantity of each item that you inspect. Once you have completed this process, you then have to sit down at a computer and manually re-enter this data into a software application. What a duplication of effort. What if you could use an iPad to create and fill out the form and eliminate this data duplication? That’s what the FormConnect apps allow you to do. You create a digital form on your iPad and then fill it out. No more paper documents and no more data duplication. Best of all, you can share this digital form with other iPad/FormConnect users so if don’t complete the inventory, someone else can take over where you left off. Two other features that come in handy are totaling the inventory using a spreadsheet like function (FormConnect Pro only) and emailing copies of the form to your customer.

Another advantage of using an iPad is the ability to capture signatures. In the example below, a consent form has been created that requires the client’s signature before a doctor can share their health information with another doctor. All that was required was for the iPad to be handed to the patient and have them sign the document. The form was then converted to a PDF and emailed to the referring doctor.

In 2018, many people will be making a decision as to whether to purchase a laptop or an iPad tablet. There are many factors that go into that decision and I possess both so I can attest that neither device is the best for every situation. But what I have found is that when I am mobile, I much prefer the iPad because it is lighter, lasts longer on a battery charge and is easier to work with when you have very little work space or have to stand.

As an example, review the form below created using the FormConnect app. The person that fills out that form walks around a factory making observations about the work environment and documenting what he sees. He is able to complete the inspection using his iPad while he walks the shop floor because it is light and portable, whereas if he chose a PC or Mac, it would be awkward to cradle in one hand and difficult to fill out because he would need to locate a table and set it down before completing the form.

When you design a form using the FormConnect or FormConnect Pro apps, the form can immediately be deployed on both the iPad and iPhone. It’s not necessary to create a separate form for each device. Below is an example of the same form formatted to work on both devices. The menu bar may look different but the actual form looks exactly the same.

A utility in Winston-Salem North Carolina is using the FormConnect app on their iPads to fill out a job site inspection form. This pairing of a digital form with the portable tablet allows the foreman to be more productive by eliminating paper documents that he would have previously toted around.
